What is an OPPP and How Does it Help a Business Owner?

Steve Ferman

As a business owner, you are wrapped up in the day-to-day details of running your business. Depending on the size and structure of the company, you may be the chief cook and bottle washer. And we all know what this means, you do too many tasks and have too many worries. You worry about revenue, supply chain problems, customers, employees, and a host of other important issues. And throughout all the work and worry, you probably, on some level, neglect your own needs, goals, and ambitions. You just don’t have the time.

As a coach, I can assure you that you are not alone. Therefore, one of the first things I do with clients is work with them on a One-Page Personal Plan (OPPP). Basically, the purpose of the OPPP is to ensure that you do not forget about yourself and what you want out of life.

Scaling Up Your Business Starts with You

Because your personal life is so entwined in your professional life, we believe that your own priorities must be aligned with your business goals. For if they are not, why do you work so hard? For example, on the business side, there are 4 necessary Pillars to build and support a thriving company. These 4 Pillars are People, Strategy, Execution, and Cash. On the personal side, there are 4 parallel areas which include Relationships, Achievements, Rituals, and Wealth. Let’s define what this means a little more:

  • Relationships. In the OPPP, this is where we identify people with whom you want to foster relationships. Perhaps you want to spend more time with your children or mentor a key college student. After all, in the end, it is the people in our lives that are the true measure of our success. However, we often have to deal with some who are toxic, destructive, or just waste our time. We also address relationships that need to end – but we do it gracefully.
  • Achievements. We find that even super successful people want more out of life. In other words, many desire a higher purpose after reaching their financial goals. This part of the OPPP focuses on goals that will make you feel like you are making a difference. Possibly, you have always wanted to form a non-profit, volunteer your time, or write a book.
  • Rituals. This is where we establish routines in your life to help you achieve your personal goals. Simple things such as date night with the spouse, breakfast with the kids, golf games with your buddies, or attending the book club. And, like the need to end bad relationships, we work with you to get rid of bad habits and rituals that may be holding you back from growing.
  • Wealth. Of course, a successful business owner accumulates a degree of wealth. But for purposes of the OPPP, after having enough money to support your lifestyle and plan for the future, what will you do with your wealth? Perhaps, you want to set aside money to help other causes or use it to help important people in your life.

What’s Next?

On a quarterly basis, we host the 4 Pillar Personal Plan Workshops. The singular purpose of these workshops is to work with you on your one-page personal plan. The next workshop is on March 8, 2022, 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. via Zoom. For more information or to register, click here. However, if you are not available on March 1 or you do not prefer the group setting, book an appointment with me to explore if we are a good fit to work together. Not every coach is for everybody, and only the right coach for you will help you achieve all of your goals!
